Navigating Your Way in The Book Publishing Process
The evolution in the book publishing process has undergone rapid development ever since the news came out that major publishers such as Barnes and Noble and Amazon reported that EBooks outsold their print counterparts. Writers who wish to self publish their own works could go beyond the traditional process by going directly to some self publishing platforms like Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing program. Nevertheless, should an aspiring writer decide to go through the old publishing process, it’s still possible and somewhat enhances the whole writing experience. To begin with, every writer should at the very least have a complete, checked, rechecked and edited manuscript. Breaking out from among the many thousands of people who submit their manuscripts and getting noticed is the second step.
Publishing or literary agents could help you a lot in the book publishing process. They’re like real estate agents in the sense they’ll help you sell your manuscript in exchange for a commission. You could still try to go about the whole process on your own but without their help, your chances for success are very limited. To be precise, they could take 10% to 15% of what you could earn. That’s not a bad proposition since they’ll also be the ones tasked with negotiating and finding publishers who would be willing to accept and consider your work. Otherwise, your masterpiece would be placed along with several hundred other manuscripts and become unsavorily labeled as unsolicited. In this regard, literary agents are also like your psychological, emotional and motivational buffer. They will cushion you from the emotional impact of rejection and would work hard to give you the best options that you could have.
Once a publisher accepts your manuscript, it’ll then be reviewed several times over by people in the publishing company. Though many see it as a cumbersome procedure, it is, nevertheless part and parcel of the book publishing process. The organizational structure of any company might be different from another’s, but essentially the process of review is the same. Of the many people who will read your work, the acquisitions editor is one of the key people who would determine your success or not. As their title implies, they’re the ones who will decide on whether your work is marketable or not. It’s safe to say that after the acquisitions editor reads your work and gives it his stamp of approval, you’re on your way to bona fide authorship. That is only if you’ve meticulously checked your manuscript for any errors that it may have.
There are certainly other ways other than the traditional book publishing process to have your work finally placed in its rightful place along with other books in bookstores. Many writers simply make their own blogs and hope to earn from advertising revenues or try to sell their books online. However, very few of these writers or bloggers would reach the same level of success as those who have undergone the rigorous process of screening and editing. Moreover, seeing your manuscript in its own cover is a reward in itself. It’s a mark that you’ve passed and went through the rigorous process and finally made it in the big leagues of literary stardom.
